James joined AIB in 2016 as a Finance and Leasing representative having completed a Master’s in Business and Finance in Dublin City University and having a keen interest in pursuing a career in that area. ‘’A big attraction was knowing how heavily AIB are involved in the GAA. James spoke with other GAA players that work here e.g. Colm O’Neill and they highly recommended it as a great place to work which could offer a balance between a career in both business and GAA’.

‘I was initially provided with 3 months of training on the technical aspects of my role as a Finance and Leasing Representative. After a few months, I met with our National Sports Ambassador Coman Goggins and discussed working on the Sports Ambassador programme which involves having mentor in the business which would support and guide me through growing my career with AIB along with assistance in studying for and sitting the required exams.

As a company we support the development of our staff, providing onsite training and releasing staff to attend courses to further their development and we recognise that our people may need flexibility in their work patterns at certain times. ‘’My manager was also very supportive with regards to balancing work with my football career – allowing me to leave the office early some days for training commitments and it has never been an issue’’. ‘My manager was very supportive and showed flexibility last summer when I received a very bad knee injury – allowing me to work from home so that I could recover and return to work and football much faster’.

A typical day for James involves getting up at 5.45am and hitting the gym by 6am. He heads to Finglas Branch for 9am and on during the course of his day he could meet up to 8 customers either at the branch or at their premises and then back to the branch for 4pm and finishing up by 5pm. James trains at least three evenings a week.

"In AIB we place our customers at the heart of everything we do and we have taken a similar approach to our GAA sponsorships. We are always searching for new ways to celebrate and showcase GAA.” (Mark Doyle, AIB Group Brands Director)
