Summary of role:

The Risk Function is an independent, second line of defence function that monitors, controls and supports risk-taking activities across AIB.  The purpose of the Risk Function is to provide advice and guidance in relation to risk while providing independent oversight and reporting on AIB’s risk profile.

The Risk Function’s main objective is to ensure AIB has a robust risk management framework and culture in place to ensure risks are taken within the risk appetite set by the Board, in support of AIB’s customer franchise and social responsibility.  

The role is positioned within the Compliance and Assurance team where we guide and monitor the Bank's compliance with relevant laws, regulations, statutory obligations and Codes of Conduct. We perform independent reviews and objective assurance on the quality and effectiveness of the Bank’s internal control system, the first line of defence and risk governance policies and frameworks.


We’re looking for someone who will:

  • Lead a 2LOD team responsible for development and maintenance of Financial Crime Compliance (AML/CFT, Sanctions, ABC and Fraud) framework while developing and driving a compliance culture through awareness, training, and providing expert advice at all levels. This includes:  
  • Delivering and developing a comprehensive proactive, independent second line compliance programme for Financial Crime across the Group in line with the regulatory requirements and industry best practices
  • Leading strategic direction, training and advisory support with regards to Financial Crime Compliance
  • Managing multiple projects across the business and supporting the Group in delivering its strategic change mandate
  • Contributing to the overall strategic direction of Compliance by supporting the Compliance senior management team
  • Leading and/or participating in regulatory examinations
  • Keeping the business informed of upstream legal and regulatory changes, and inputting to the implementation of changes as required.
  • Advise and support the business in understanding and implementing its AML/CFT Compliance obligations
  • Advise, review and challenge in respect of new products, propositions, product reviews, delivery channels and regulatory change projects
  • Design and provide AML/CFT Compliance risk training to facilitate awareness and comprehension of the risks, obligations and responsibilities at all levels in the organisation including the Board
  • Maintain an accurate and comprehensive inventory of applicable laws, regulations and codes
  • Deputising for the Group MLRO at various Boards and internal/external fora
  • Supporting the MLRO in the management of the Financial Crime Compliance framework on a day-to-day basis

You will need to show us that you can/have:

  1. At least eight years in a financial services environment, preferably in an AML/CFT Compliance role with proven experience in leading a team of Compliance professionals.
  2. Have a proven expert knowledge of key banking regulations, directives, standards and guidelines and the experience to provide expert advice, review and challenge.  Relevant qualifications would be advantageous
  3. Have proven experience in managing relationships with business stakeholders and Regulators
  4. Ability to effectively present on Financial Crime topics to internal and external parties.
  5. Strong written and verbal communication skills; at ease communicating and presenting to senior management.
